Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to question particular rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
