Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of millions of people across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
