Our Premier Record of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Number One Spot.

At first glance, this work might appear more like an arduous academic quiz than the latest pop record from an artist who just had a last single was a collaboration with a global K-pop icon. Divided across four distinct sections and voiced in thirteen languages, it is a dizzying orchestral-influenced work exploring female mystique, religious ascent, and bodily change, frequently by way of the prism of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic treated with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—is launched skyward on this record, supported by the lush sound of a full symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer among an extensive roll call of collaborators. The pure ambition by itself renders the efforts of contemporary pop stars appear rather modest.

Transcending Academic Pretense

That Lux succeeds in transcend overly academic posturing feels nearly miraculous, with sole praise belonging to Rosalía. Although it's not the first time album to blend historical sounds and modern styles, its scale feel much higher here, with the balancing act far more dramatic. What really elevates her fourth album, outside of its complex melodies, dense arrangements, and engrained drama, is an essential sense of playfulness. Much like the legendary artist during her height, you find a captivating quality to Rosalía's voice which sweeps the listener up in its tornado. Even when she's breaking hearts apart, you nevertheless desire to stay right there through the journey.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

That exuberant energy shines clearly during the stirring piano-led ballad about a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy over more than four moments. Then, everything falls silent, and we hear a spontaneous giggle and a declaration before a comically over-the-top string surge thuds down like comedic impact. The song immediately segues into the wild track featuring racing strings, a powerful choir, and a cameo role from the artist herself.

"The charm with this album lies in the listener never quite know—nor wish to know—where you will go to next."

Nearly each track ends in a totally distinct place than where it started. A track explores the fleeting trappings of fame with a delicate symphony only to collapsing into electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing the artist's earlier rhythmic work begins out dark and brooding, featuring menacing beats, before sudden flamenco rhythms and a heavenly chorus enter to soften its jagged corners.

The Bridge Of Art & Accessibility

A key achievement of the album is straddling the line between radical innovation and broad accessibility. This is no surprise that it has become her first work to crack the upper reaches of key charts: its heart contains a collection of utterly undeniable hits. A song sung entirely in English swells around a chorus that seems to collect more and more infectious melodies as it spins skyward. This feat is repeated on a different powerful track that grows and constricts, weaving layered tunes as a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with cultural honesty of other heartbreak songs, eviscerating an ex- partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals have a painted-on smile, like a storybook figure concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist scale, a hungry grasp for capital-A artistry in an era of impending AI-generated sameness. It eschews solipsism for glorious elevation, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its inherent excess. This is an abundant well of hidden treasure that requires patience to fully explore but doesn't feels like hard work. Where some big pop albums of 2025 felt like feasting on meal, Lux offers a sumptuous feast where the guests around it, perhaps tipsy on holy wine, flutter from conversations about historical saints, the profound feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and common gossip about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from pop's most restlessly inventive practitioner.
